Great place. Don't have to feel self conscious about anything, friendly people, great bartenders. Very comfortable bar.

Visiting Boston from NYC, I wanted a low-key (as low key as gay bars can be..) bar to meet some people, hang out and have a few drinks. I enjoyed the Alley. As many have pointed out, the attitude factor is little, the drinks are poured heavily and the people are friendly. it borders somewhere on dive bar meetings local watering hole. It is damned near impossible to find if you don't know Boston; so, good luck!

We were there in June and had a good time. Friendly bartenders and customers were friendly. Nothing fabulous, but just a good, clean friendly bar.

Been back to this bar several times hoping to have a better experience however I never do. A older crowd that seems to stick to themselves. They play Donna Summer type music. Nothing fun or fancy here.

Granted, I usually only go here on the weekends, when it's livelier than other nights, but it's always crowded and there are a lot of people having fun.
Strangers will chat with you and you can make some friends. (Though that might have more to do with a Body by Bud and this being a bear bar than anything else.)
The drinks are strong and cheap, the music isn't loud enough to stop you from talking to people, and you can have a lot of fun here.

I just moved to Boston from Chicago and I found this place to be really cool! Friendly staff and guests. a bar with no attitude. Now that's something nowadays:)

I like the alley.
Hey, it's cool casual men stuff. What do gay men want, just that cool casual men stuff.Talking, whatever, nothing extradinary but that is just fine. I think it is anyway..

Had a great time here, but the atmosphere is little bright. It's a large open space, so it's hard to feel cozy, unless you're off in one of the corners. People were very friendly. A pool table dominates the space. Great bartenders.

Always have a grrreat time at the Alley. From the Friendly DoorBears to the Beartenders who pour a good drink to the friendly 30's-50's crowd, packed with Bears & Cubs and their admirers and the more than occasional Leatherbear, this place is always a good time.. Friday happy hour is just that - happy. And weekend the upstairs bar and environs can get mighty frisky. I never miss a night at the Alley when in Boston!

From 2002 to about 2004, this used to be a really cool chilled bears bar and sports bar. However, now its changed. It seemd to attract all of the attitude queens from the old 119 Merrimac bar. The staff seem bored, depressed and even unkempt. There even seems to be less of a bear crowd there but mostly queeny old trolls. If you like a masculine crowd, go to the Providence Eagle. It's a lot more fun. Skip this place.

I like Friday nights in here because the true 119 regulars go in here. Saturday nights is their busiest. -Not bad but the staff is so depressing. The downstairs bartenders are gross. They play with each other and themselves in between drinks. They don't even wash their hands while doing this in public. Also, my partner and I noticed that near closing time, the workers actually drink alcohol while serving others. -Isn't that against the law and cause for termination? I am so glad I don't live in this city with behaviour like this going on. However, I still come here because I am most comfortable here than any other club in this rotten city!

This is the place to go if you like bears and older guys. GREAT drinks, friendly staff and always a willing crowd. Busy after work and on Saturday nights.

Great cruise bar in downtown boston. Mostly an older and bearish type crowd. No twinks or women.
This place is not a mixed bar. Its no wonder the previous poster didnt like it. Most likely got the cold shoulder for obvious reasons.
