Hey, I was not impressed earlier in the eve, but later at night, it was fun. So, the place is good & bad like anything else. I like that it gets crowded late & you can hook up if you want. It's not a place where you have to go with friends. There are enough people to be able to find someone to talk to about something.

Got there early only three people in the bar...nice bartender, he advised that the place go for happy hour crowd was Fritz (see other review on them) I came back around nine about 10 people in bar....i drank my drink and went back to hotel where at least people speak to you. Boston= the most unfriendly, clickish gay scenes I have ever seen. I thought DC and NYC were bad but you have definately got them beat. Recommendation, stay at Hotel, hang at lobby bar and get on Craigslist if you want gay encounters.

Everyone has their own opinion; and I follow my opinion with my money. This establishment is in NO way a remembrance of any Eagle bar. The decor says dirty and dingy with a few pieces of old posters and "should have never seen the light of day"-junk. This may have been a TRUE Eagle at some point in the past, but sorry to say it is no more.

If your looking for the Eagle of leather/levi fame this isnt it...but it is a neighborhood cruisey bar with great memoribelia of Eagles past!
The drinks are cheap, strong and go down easy!
The owner/bartender Jack is sassy, brash and takes no prisoner...but he is a character!
Bruce the other bartender is the anti-Jack...sweet, easy going and also makes a strong pour.
Friday and Saturday nights is very busy after 11pm....rest of week is quiet, with exceptions of locals and random flight crews!
Has pool table, some video games and is a good later night stop on way to somewhere else or to await what will come as over flow from other bars.
Overflow.....bad side: the bathrooms absolutely are wretched smelling.

This bar only gets busy after 1:00am when many guys head to the Eagle for one last drink before closing at 2:00am. This bar is also often referred to as the "dirty bird" for both the general state of disrepair / lack of cleaning and the fact that many head there for their last chance to hook up for the night.

Don't wear your sports coat or cashmere sweater here, but wear either your leather or levis. This IS a leather BAR ! Only crowded late in the evening and it is what a leather bar is all about. If your not into leather, go to another bar in Boston.

I personally refuse to spend money in this place. 1 bartender is so rude and nasty its horrifying to watch how he treats customers. Its also very dirty. What every you do, do NOT go into the bathroom. One would think with all the "last call" business that this place does they could clean and redo they bathroom. This is a great place for a last minute hookup. Nuf said.

The Eagle has remained, while the rest of the neighborhood has changed around it. Across from the Boston Center for the Arts, and upscale restaurants such as Sibling Rivalry and Hamersley's Bistro, the Eagle still serves cheap drinks in a relaxed setting. It's a neighborhood bar, and you'd be hard pressed to think of it as a leather or denim bar. If you conjure the Eagle in Amsterdam or other cities, this is certainly not their hard core brother.
Mostly, it is a place for local tipplers, much easier to spend time in without burning eyes, now that smoking is outlawed.
There's a pool table in the back, with the men's room (with no door and no way to stop anyone playing pool from seeing your junk at the urinal) just beyond it.
Service can be friendly or surly, depending on the proprietor's mood.
But, come closing time, the Eagle transforms. You see, South End men either don't drive, or won't dare lose their overnight parking space to pull their car out, once they are home from work. So, many who went somewhere in town that live in the South End pop their nose in, to "pick up a carry-out to take home". When they close at 2, the "Sidewalk Sale" is something to behold.
We tend to pop into the Eagle before theater events across the street, for quick, cheap drinks. Sometimes we even slug one back at intermission.
It's not a place to plan an evening around, or a tourist must-see. But, for a neighborhood watering hole, it's nice to know there's a place in an otherwise pricey neighborhood that is there for you, when you hair isn't perfect, and you're in your run-to-the-supermarket clothes.

It doesnt have to be a hook up bar. But boston is missing a good dive bar / lounge scene. I just moved back from NYC...I think the Eagle is the closest you can come to an old fashioned NYC dive bar in NYC. (minus burgers)

I came to visit a friend and I am from CT. I have to say that the bartenders were AWSOME! Talk about buy one get one free!! I did not have to say a word, they knew what I wanted and smiled to me and my friends every time. I would def tell my friends to make this a stop on any night of the week. Any queens who say different would be because they acted like girls instead of men. If you like the company of men then this is the place to be.

Neighborhood bar, older crowd, busy toward the end of the night as people are looking to get laid. It's definitely a hole in the wall bar.

ok ...so its NOT avalon and sums up to just a little hole in the wall ...BUT BUT BUT ...its also notorious as a LATE NIGHT LAST STOP (especially if your looking to score)

This truely is a hole, psychos lurk, the bartender hates you unless he thinks he can berade you (he is a lush and a prick because of his insecurity). I am a nice guy but meeting that flamer was horrible. If he likes you, you fit in way too well, run if he does and run if he does not (like you). Sketchy to say the least.

I always feel like 'm drinking in someones old garage. the clientele is on the younger side or at least they want to be. jack the owner/bartender can be a HOOT when he's taking his medication, or a bitter nasty old queen -- hopefully you get him on a good night I think he might have a heart of gold but its probably been buried behind the building for the past 50 years. do go you might find its unique Boston charm addictive (ask jack for a Jack-Me-Off or an Anna Nicole Smith, house speciality drinks)

before we travelled to Boston I checked out this site and read the reviews and thought I'd better aviod this bar. So we went to Fritz first and hated that bar so we went onto the Eagle and thought it a great bar and the barman very friendly in his sort of way. Had three stays in Boston whilst travelling around and every time we went back he remembered us and what we drank and even gave us a few drinks on the house. The toilets do need a really good clean as you have to hold your nose because of the smell. however I would recommend this bar and thought both the barman and clientel very warm and friendly

I was compelled to write a review of the Eagle from someone who lives in the South End. It's your friendly neighborhood bar. More everyday then leather, but has a great afterwork crowd (5pm) and is always busy on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights (11pm on -- later the better!).
It's a bar, bar. No dance floor (thank god!). One pool table, a few video games, and a meat rack (back against the mirrors, it's not a huge space and not your usual Eagle (that you might expect from other cities) but it's a great place to meet real guyz.
And the place (and the staff) have seen it all. It's been there for 20+ years and maintains despite the gentrification all around it that would otherwise want it pushed out (valet parking anyone?).
Check it out when you're in the city. And be sure to say hi to the owner/bartender...and ask for a few stories from yesteryear.

Than this dump and Jack the Bartender is a bitter rude old queen. Avoid this dump unless you are in a bitchy mood waiting to get laid. Humm no wonder why its in the South End.

The other reviewers are spot-on perfect in their description of that miserable owner, Jack. Miserable is being kind, actually. I've never seen such an overbearing, rude, and downright mean individual in the service industry. The patrons are old, grizzled, and generally unatractive. For the life of me, I can't imagine anyone going here to cruise unless you recently had a leg amputated, and this was, literally, your last and only hope of getting laid. The pool table, busy until closing (or until Jack decides to shut it down) is the only thing of small value here ... oh, and if you have to take a leak, your better off pissing in your beer glass than taking a chance in their "bathroom" ... it hasn't seen a cleaning since Madonna was a virgin.

Ask anyone in Boston about The Eagle, and the first thing they say is "I hate that asshole Jack".
Jack is of course, the owners lover and bartender. He is a tired old queen and is just one miserable prick. Unless you are part of the clique in here, forget about getting served.
The biggest mistake people make with this place is that they assume it is like every other Eagle Bar in the country. It is not a leather bar at all. It is simply a shitty dive bar with bitter old queens. It is only busy from 1AM till close. It is the last resort for anyone looking to get laid at night. The rest of the time, it is empty.

I do not mind seedy bars. Anyone who visits metro. areas often has seen it all. Yet there is nothing interesting, clean, friendly or sexy about this dump. Jack, a fixture bar tender/owner here is so rude the only way to really get back at this nasty old queen is to not spend ANY of your money here.

Visiting Boston and from the description this place sounded perfect. I walked the mile from my hotel and was sorely disappointed. The unfriendly bartender took his time serving my drink even though I was one of 5 people in the entire bar. This is one to miss!
So, what do you say?
