Honoring Urvashi Vaid, an LGBT activist who has fought to create a world free of bigotry, violence and discrimination.
Urvashi has made change through her leadership at myriad advocacy organizations, the creation of the first lesbian political action committee (LPAC), and writings that challenge the LGBT movement to be expansive in its thinking and inclusive in its work. We are proud to note that while a law student at Northeastern University, Urvashi was among GLAD’s very first staff members, lending her great talents to the inception of the LGBT legal movement. As she said in her 1993 March on Washington for Lesbian, Gay and Bi Equal Rights speech, “The gay civil rights movement is an integral part of the American promise of freedomâ€.
