ABOUT WAGLY
The mission of the West Suburban Alliance of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer Youth (WAGLY) is to support the health and well-being of GLBTQ teens in the Boston MetroWest area by offering youth-led and adult-supported social and educational programs.
Now serving high school youth from 42 towns, WAGLY offers a meeting for all GLBTQ teens every Monday night throughout the year. In addition, transgender and gender-nonconforming youth enjoy a dedicated program twice a month, which focuses on their particular interests and concerns.
Even though we are located here in Massachusetts, where we have achieved marriage equality and many high schools have gay-straight alliances, GLBTQ teens face challenges above and beyond those of their peers. They are more likely to be isolated, become depressed, abuse alcohol and drugs, and contemplate suicide. WAGLY provides a safe and supportive place where these youth feel accepted, proud and connected—where they can be themselves and meet mature, trustworthy GLBTQ adults, who can serve as role models for them as they traverse their adolescent years.
It has become apparent that we cannot meet the needs of the GLBTQ population without additional funding and growth. We must increase our outreach—geographically, since many teens cannot get to our meetings in Wellesley, and demographically, since younger students, in particular those in middle school, are already clamoring for a group of their own.
The future is bright for WAGLY, but your help is critical to our future! If you are interested in being a organization or individual sponsor for Come OUT MetroWest, please e-mail kathy.kaufmann@wagly.org or phone 781.710.3225.
