noun
noun: mimesis
1. imitation, in particular.
- representation or imitation of the real world in art and literature.
- the deliberate imitation of the behavior of one group of people by another as a factor in social change.
Mimesis is a natural and cultural phenomena. It is a duality: primary and duplicate, authentic and replica, original and remix, real and more real? In ancient times Aristotle and Plato argued about Mimesis, specifically as it relates to Art as Imitation. In our modern Internet age we may find ourselves cultivating online doppelgangers – Identity as Imitation - this is cultural Mimesis in action. A phenomena as adept in our digital world as the natural world.
Much of Burner culture tends to acculturate those who don’t know or misunderstand what occurs on the playa. Black Rock City is a temporal zone with a permanence in hearts and minds. This change leads us to create our own representations of these memories beyond photos, with regional events and actions. We duplicate Burning Man culture and effect a social wave of radical creativity and acceptance. Contradicting literary scholar of his day, Oscar Wilde, who wrote – “Life imitates Art far more than Art imitates Life”. Which do you prefer the real or the unreal? Has today’s technology made them virtually interchangeable? Do we create anew or are we continuously recreating?
Join us on Saturday November 7th, 2015, as we explore the abstract and the concrete. Come as you are, or as someone who is something else… bring art, music, talk. Let’s create a commotion - a night of situations that move our feet and our souls – let’s make the moment art.
