To be black and queer is to be rendered invisible. Throughout our existence, black queer and trans people have carved out our own spaces to overcome dominant social perspectives that invalidate our lives and experiences. SPECULUM investigates black queer identity through the context of color and visual theory. What is color? What is identity? Does it exist beyond the way it is perceived by us? The color spectrum as we know it is not reality, but rather, a vast and complex relationship between light energy and our ability to see. SPECULUM digs deep to shed light on that which reaches beyond the limits of human sense and perception. Through sharing our stories, we challenge limited and “common sense” notions of identity in order to invoke black queer visibility. Art and storytelling allows us to reclaim the parts of us that are silenced and invisibilized. This project aims to open eyes and minds to the unbounded complexity of lived experiences. Black Venus (they/she) grew up surrounded by artists and educators. They are a renaissance, finding liberation in balancing different art forms including, but never limited to, poetry, theater, and music. The art of Black Venus centers their experience as a queer black artist born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts. Aside from creating, Black is an active community organizer. They collaborate with fellow artists on programming that aims to dismantle oppression and promotes healing through creative practices.
OUT’hood FEST is the culmination of The Theater Offensive’s OUT'hood Residency Program, which supports the creation of artwork by, for, and/or about LGBTQ people. This residency program supports artists with mentorship, in-kind resources, and financial support. OUT'hood FEST and the OUT'hood Residency Program were made possible by the Barr Foundation and the Klarman Family Foundation. Additional support for OUT'hood Fest comes from our co-presenter Hibernian Hall, the National Performance Network, the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the Boston Cultural Council, and the Hispanic Black Gay Coalition.
Since 1989, The Theater Offensive has served its mission with groundbreaking interactive workshops and shows by, for, and about the LGBTQ community. Our work is called OUT In Your Neighborhood (OUT’hood) because we go beyond traditional theater spaces. OUT’hood reflects the diversity of Boston, gives voice to underserved LGBT community members, creates avenues for cross-cultural dialogue, and breaks down the barriers of homophobia, racism, bigotry, and hate.
