relaxed, ecclectic

long ago i worked as a bar back at this cool south end bar. i've visited it many times since and it retains a great, relaxed, low-key vibe. there's none of the pretension and elitism that sometimes makes boston insufferable. lots of working class guys from the burbs mixed with locals. this is the kinda place where you can cruise or grab a window table with friends and just chat for hours. it can get noisy (tile floors), but the music tends to not be overpowering. if you are from out of town get a room at the chandler inn upstairs, which is nice and inexpensive. working there, i saw many visitor staying there invite an eager local upstairs for a more intimate meeting :-)

Friendly Neighborhood Bar

I visted boston a few months ago with a friend...and we talked to several people at the bar. I moved back here last week and talked to a guy from LA at the bar for a bit. Its just an ok place. Drinks are good and cheap. And the other posts that meantion some "attitude" well...thats just a boston thing in general. Its so funny. In NYC you talk to the person next to you no matter what. It is just etiquet. If you try that in boston people look at you like you are a freak. Fritz is nice for an after work drink etc. The sunday bunch is pretty good. But is not a high spot if your are visiting from out of town...then it is not a must see. Nice for the older-ish crowd tho

Neighborhood Gay Sports Bar

A nice place to watch the games, watch the boys and chat with friends. Like all bars, it's a bit tough when you walk in alone, but the staff is friendly and as with most of the New England bars - the locals do warm up.

I use to live in Boston. It was a different time. People were more friendly. Maybe it was because I was young and beautiful then, but I am only 47 now. The bartender was very nice and spoke to me while making my drinks. I was more disappointed with the room though upstairs. I am from Maine. I'm kind of use to luxury.
